Obstetrics and gynecology, commonly abbreviated as OB/GYN, is a medical specialty that focuses on women’s reproductive health. OB/GYNs are experts in both obstetrics, which involves the care of pregnant women and their unborn babies, and gynecology, which focuses on the female reproductive system outside of pregnancy.

In obstetrics, OB/GYNs provide comprehensive care to women throughout their pregnancies, from conception to childbirth and postpartum. They monitor the health and development of both the mother and the fetus, offering prenatal care, conducting regular check-ups, and performing diagnostic tests such as ultrasounds to ensure a healthy pregnancy. OB/GYNs also assist with labor and delivery, providing medical interventions when necessary to ensure a safe birth for both the mother and the baby.

In addition to caring for pregnant women, OB/GYNs also specialize in gynecology, which encompasses a wide range of women’s health issues. This includes menstrual disorders, fertility issues, contraception, menopause management, and the diagnosis and treatment of various gynecological conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
